Shortages of chicken eggs will be resolved in mid 2011: Thai economist

BANGKOK, April 26 (TNA) - A leading Thai economist said on Tuesday that the problem of chicken egg shortages on the domestic market should be resolved over the next couple of months when more supply comes.

Thanawat Polvichai, Director of University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce's Economic and Business Forecasting Centre, acknowledged that the current price hike of chicken eggs nationwide was caused by lower supply due to recent outbreaks of poultry diseases which led to a number of dead fowl.

Thanawat projected, however, that the situation should return to normal over the next couple of months when more supply of eggs from imported chicken breeders are distributed to serve domestic demand.

According to the leading Thai economist, the local exporters' delay of chicken egg shipments to overseas markets at the moment, as requested by the Thai government, will also add some one million chicken eggs a day to the domestic market in the coming months, which should also psychologically cap chicken egg prices at local outlets and stores to reasonable levels.

The senior economist cautioned, however, that Thailand may face the problem of oversupply of chicken eggs in mid 2011, suggesting that the Thai government promote more exports of chicken eggs and launch public campaigns on more domestic consumption of chicken eggs then to solve the problem, noting that studies have found Thailand's per capita consumption of chicken eggs stands at some 140 units annually, compared with about 200 units annually in surveyed overseas economies.
