Thai-Lao border trade value soars to Bt16 billion in Q1

MUKDAHAN, April 26 (TNA) - The value of Thai-Lao border trade through the customs checkpoints in the northeastern province of Mukdahan exceeded 16 billion baht in the first quarter of this year.

Nannapas Janpoom, acting commerce chief of Mukdahan, said the value of Thai-Lao trade through Mukdahan amounted to 7.85 billion baht in March this year, rising by 3.4 billion baht or 76 per cent from the value in February this year.

The value of Thai exports to Laos stands at 5.35 billion baht. Major export items are hard disks, fuel, consumer products, construction materials, vehicles and automotive parts. Thailand imported products worth 2.5 billion baht from Laos. The value of Thai-Lao border trade through Mukdahan province amounted to 16.33 billion baht in the first quarter of this year, rising by 9.43 billion baht or 136 per cent from the same period last year.

In the meantime, Thai border trade with Cambodia starts to feel the impacts of the border conflict.

In Chanthaburi province, Isiwut Tangkiart, president of the association of border traders and tour operators in the province, said the Thai-Cambodian conflict, which started in Phanom Dong Rak district of Surin province on April 22 has started to have impacts on Thai-Cambodian border trade in Chanthaburi. Operators in Phnom Penh, which is the Cambodian capital and those in other Cambodian provinces have stopped making orders for Thai products in advance. They are placing orders on a daily basis and reducing the amounts of their orders.

It is the first time ever for Cambodian operators to stop placing orders in advance with traders in Chanthaburi. Cambodian operators may fear that border passes in Chanthaburi will be closed.

Isiwut said the situation should reduce the value of border trade in Chanthaburi by at least 10 million baht per day. (TNA)
