Central bank governor: Thai-Cambodian clash will not affect overall economy

BANGKOK, April 26 (TNA) - Bank of Thailand governor Prasarn Trairatvorakul said the clashes between Thailand and Cambodia along the border in Surin province will have no macroeconomic impacts. He explained that Thai exports to Cambodia accounted for less than 1% of overall Thai exports. If the clashes are contained, impacts on border trade will be limited.
However, Prasarn said the clash has created problems for people in both countries. He called for an immediate end to the clashes and admitted that it was difficult to find a perfect solution appropriate for both sides. He also called for the containment of the conflict.
Meanwhile, Deputy Commerce Minister Alongkorn Ponlaboot said the clashes have reduced border trade value by 10 million baht per day. However, the clash is still contained in Surin and Si Sa Ket provinces and trade through Chong Sa-ngam border pass in Si Sa Ket and Chong Jom pass in Surin accounts for only 5% of Thai-Cambodian border trade. The other 95% of business passing through Chanthaburi and Sa Kaeo provinces continues as usual.
The deputy commerce minister added Thai-Cambodian border trade was still expanding by 22% and the border problem should eventually be relieved.
Alongkorn confirmed that the other border passes remained open to maintain border trade but the border passes close to clash sites had to be closed for security reasons. (TNA)
