Thailand to review stance towards Cambodia

BANGKOK, April 26 (TNA) - Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya will meet with the Defense Minister to review Thailand’s stance towards Cambodia after gunfire between troops rages into its fifth day.

Kasit made the call on Monday night following his visit to Thailand’s northeast Surin province to assess the latest border crossfire since last Friday, saying the move was now imperative since Cambodia has rejected every proposal to settle disputes bilaterally.

Kasit insisted the meeting with General Prawit Wongsuwon would determine the safety of some 30,000 people inhabiting the volatile areas. He noted a mass evacuation there was merely unreasonable as it would greatly impact their lives.

Meanwhile, the foreign minister insisted Thailand has always made efforts to resolve disputes without affecting bilateral cooperation, but the aggression from Cambodia this time has shown intentional provocation, and that ASEAN would need to acknowledge such hostility. (TNA)
