Second quake occurs at eastern coast of Kamchatka




PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKY, April 26 (Itar-Tass) - The second earthquake
on Tuesday has been registered off the eastern coast of Kamchatka. There
have been no casualties or destruction. No tsunami alert has been
announced, the Kamchatka branch of the Geophysical Service of the Russian
Academy of Sciences told Itar-Tass.
An earth tremor with a magnitude of 4.6 points was recorded at 06:08,
local time (22:08 MSK, Monday). The epicentre was in the Karaginsky Gulf
about 85 kilometres from the Ossora district centre in the Karaginsky
district of the Koryak area in the northeast of the peninsula. The seismic
focus, according to the Kamchatka seismologists, was at a depth of about 8
kilometres under the seabed.
Two hours before that - at 04:26, local time (20:26 MSK, April 25) an
earthquake with a magnitude 5.0 points hit the same area. It has also
caused no adverse effects, and according to the press service of the
Russian Emergency Situations Ministry's (EMERCOM) main department for the
Kamchatka Territory, the quake was not felt in the peninsula's populated
localities.
Karaginsky Gulf is a large gulf in the Bering Sea off the
north-eastern coast of Kamchatka, which cuts 117 kilometres deep inland.
The depth of the gulf is between 30 to 60 metres. The largest island in
the gulf is the Karaginsky Island, separated from the mainland by the
Litke Strait (width: 21 to 72 kilometres). The Karaginsky Gulf is covered
with ice from December till June.
