Thailand to enlist rubber-plantations under CDM

BANGKOK, April 25 (TNA) - Thailand will turn 800,000 rais of rubber plantation into an emission-reduction project under the UN-dubbed “Clean Development Mechanism” (CDM), in a bid to preserve the environment while generating revenue for the country.

Vice Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Supachai Phosu said on Monday the envisaged plan will earn the country certified emission reduction (CER) credits in the future, which may then be traded and sold to industrialized countries falling short of emission reduction targets, as mandated by the United Nations’ Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

Supachai said the initiative will also contribute to making higher incomes among Thai rubber producers from the expansion of plantation grounds, which will further catalyze greening activities in Thailand.

The Rubber Replanting Aid Fund Office, and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment’s Greenhouse Gas Management Organization, is expected to finalize on the proposal by the 2011 fiscal year.

Meanwhile, Lakchai Kittipol, head of the Thai Rubber Association, praised the initiative as benefiting both rubber producers and the country, drawing on the success of CDM projects at a rubber plantation field in Thailand’s Kanchanaburi Province, as well as in Laos.

Lakchai noted however, although carbon transaction has gained importance worldwide, federal investments in CDM have been minimal, with the private sector apparently still taking the lead. (TNA)
