Aide: Thaksin not involved in Thai-Cambodian border rows

BANGKOK, April 25 (TNA) - A close aide of exiled ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra insisted Monday the former Thai leader has not been involved in the new spate of border clashes between Thailand and neighbouring Cambodia as accused by some groups of people.

Noppadon Pattama, Thaksin's legal advisor, said that the convicted ex-Thai premier is not in Cambodia, nor has he set up an armed force against the Thai government.

Thaksin was a former advisor to the Phnom Penh government and Cambodian Premier Hun Sen.

Noppadon affirmed that Thaksin is now in the Middle East and has no plan to travel to any other places, even during forthcoming electoral campaigns and a new general election in Thailand in mid 2011.

According to the legal advisor, Thaksin has expressed his sadness and sympathy with families of Thai troops who died or were injured from the new round of border clashes between Thailand and Cambodia, which erupted last Friday resulting in nearly 10 confirmed fatalities and almost 30 injuries in the Thai side so far.

Noppadon said that it is the Thai government's duty to seek bilateral solutions to the re-emerging border violence with Cambodia to avoid any third-party mediation, namely the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and or the United Nations, in which both Thailand and Cambodia are members.
