Thai PM urges village volunteers to 'build up fence' against drugs
BANGKOK, April 25 (TNA) - Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has urged village volunteers to help "build up fence" against narcotics in their communities.
Abhisit made the call during his visit to Thailand's northernmost Mae Hong Son Province on Monday, suggesting that village volunteers launch campaigns in their respective areas to distance local children and youngsters from harmful drugs.
The Thai government has implemented a strategic policy against narcotics, campaigning families, schools, and communities, the whole Thai society and border areas to create five national fences to protect Thai people from drug threats.
Accompanied by Thai National Police Chief Police General Wichean Potposree, Vice Minister Attached to the Prime Minister's Office Issara Sunthornwat and his Secretary General Ancharee Vanichtepabutr, the Thai Democrat premier also praised people in Mae Hong Son for upholding their spirits of social harmony and amicability and supporting full participation of all local sectors and parties in political activities, which have become a good model for other provinces to follow suit.
Abhisit insisted that he has aimed to take good care and ensure security of the public in the long run, declaring May 1, 2011 will be the day when his administration will expand the social security system to cover local workforces who have had no access to the official welfare system yet, as part of Thailand's observation of the International Labour Day, also known as the May Day.
