Indonesian Foreign Minister cancels Thailand Visit

BANGKOK, April 25 (TNA) - Chavanond Intarakomalyasut, secretary to the Thai foreign minister, confirmed that the Indonesian foreign minister informed the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the cancellation of his planned trip to Thailand on Sunday night without explaining the reason or indicating a later visit to Bangkok.

The Indonesian foreign minister was scheduled to first visit Cambodia to sign an agreement on deploying Indonesian observers at a contentious area along the Thai-Cambodian border to prevent further armed clashes between the two neighboring countries. The Indonesian foreign minister, whose country is the current chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), in which both Cambodia and Thailand are members, would then, according to his earlier plan, fly to Bangkok to meet his Thai counterpart Kasit Piromya on Monday.

Chavanond said he expected the Thai foreign minister would meet his Cambodian counterpart Hor Namhong on the sidelines of the forthcoming ASEAN summit and related forums, set to be held in Indonesia early next month, to discuss reemerging border tension following a new spate of crossfire between Cambodian and Thai troops beginning last Friday, leaving nearly 10 deaths and more than a dozen injuries on both sides and leading to the evacuation of thousands of people to safety places.
