IHEC threatens to sue anyone attempting to defame it

Baghdad (NINA) – Independent High Electoral Commission threatened to “follow all constitutional and legal procedures and sue those who defame the commission.”

“There are accusations that do not base on documents and evidences that need to be provided in a legal accusation away from propagandas that aim at distorting the image of success achieved by IHEC in the past elections it run,” a statement issued by the commission said.

It added that “hosting or investigating a state institution by the parliament is legal procedure to assess these institutions’ performance and spotlight the malfunctioning parts in them. IHEC is one of the important institutions in Iraq that was founded to arrange and run elections as a basic requirement for its democratic system.”

It went on saying that “with all the importance that IHEC enjoys, it does not give immunity from investigation or being hosted by the legislative authority, it is legal if it counted on evidences and facts, but, there is a necessity to preserve the commission’s reputation and not to indulge in statements to media that could distort IHEC’s reputation.”

It referred that “after the commission received the investigation request, it noticed a propaganda launched by those who called for the investigation which deviated from the main reason of investigation.”

IHEC expressed readiness to provide all needed info and answers to the questions in a very transparent and professional way. It also said it is confident of all its financial and admin procedures as these procedures are reviewed by the Supreme Audit Board and Integrity Commission.
