Abhisit wants to talk with Hun Sen to solve Thai-Cambodian conflicts

BANGKOK, April 24 (TNA) - Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said on Sunday he hoped to hold bilateral talk with his Cambodian counterpart Hun Sen in the near future to settle their border conflicts peacefully.
Abhisit said he would meet Hun Sen during the ASEAN Summit in Indonesia on May 7 and 8. He wanted to discuss border issues then so that other parties would not get involved.
Abhisit said he hoped the neighboring countries which are also members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) can coexist. He believed that Cambodia would not reject all negotiation chances because both sides just had their Joint Boundary Commission (JBC) meeting.
On Thailand’s roles, the prime minister said the Thai armed forces were doing their best to defend the national sovereignty and basing actions on internationally recognized practices.
Meanwhile, Thai Defence Ministry spokesman Colonel Thanathip Sawangsaeng has denied Cambodia’s allegation that Thai soldiers used air attacks, chemical weapons and poisonous gas.
He said Thai soldiers used only helicopters to transport the injured and that if the allegation had been true, Cambodia would have suffered heavier damages.
The spokesman confirmed that the Thai defence ministry complied with the UN commandments that called for negotiations and noted that bilateral negotiations were the best solution for Thailand and Cambodia. (TNA)
