Abhisit : Cambodia opens fire because it wants to attract the world community

Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said on Sunday Thailand did not start the latest border clash with Cambodia and it had to respond to Cambodia to protect the national sovereignty. He pointed out Cambodia wanted to raise the border conflict in international forums.
In his weekly talk programme on TV Sunday morning, Abhisit elaborated on the border clash between Thailand and Cambodia near Ta Muen Thom and Ta Kwai temples in Phanom Dongrak district of Surin province in the past two days. The clash killed at least 10 soldiers and injured more of both sides.
The prime minister expressed his condolences to the deaths of Thai soldiers and his concerns for nearly 30,000 people who were evacuated. He assured the Thai armed forces would protect Thai people.
Abhisit said that his government was supporting the armed forces and abiding by international practices and added that Thailand would attack only weaponry locations.
In the meantime, he said, the Thai foreign minister had issued a protest against Cambodia and informed the chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN ) of facts and reasons for handling the issue with bilateral mechanisms.
The prime minister said Thailand was ready to organise bilateral meetings to solve the problem. He was referring to the meetings of the Thai-Cambodian Regional Border Committee (RBC) and the bilateral Joint Boundary Commission (JBC).
The meetings could help restore peaceful life for people of both countries but Cambodia was trying to raise the bilateral conflict in international forums, Abhisit said and noted that Cambodia managed to contact international organisations just after border violence.
Abhisit stressed that the Thai armed forces clearly abide by international practices and would not fall into a trap of Cambodia which wants to present a violent picture of the conflict that seems to require international approaches instead of bilateral ones so that a third-party country will arrive for observation.
