SOME 150 TRANSJAKARTA BUS DRIVERS STAGE RALLY DEMANDING A RAISE
Jakarta, Sept 1 (ANTARA)- A total of 150 TransJakarta bus drivers staged a rally here Monday, coinciding with the first day of the Ramadhan fasting month, demanding a salary hike.
On the unexpected problem, Jakarta governor Fauzi Bowo asked the drivers, plying corridors two and three of the bus routes, not to disrupt the bus services to passengers.
But the rally had caused thousands of passengers stranded in Pulo Mas area, forcing them to wait in about 15-meter long queue.
"I need to prioritize services to the society, so that I ask them (drivers) to resume working," the governor said, adding that his side was negotiating the drivers' demand for a raise.
"We are monitoring what they are discussing there," he said.
In the meantime, the drivers, who have been receiving a monthly salary of about two million rupiahs, threatened to keep staging the rally if the city administration fails to meet their demand.
Desy, one of the demonstrators, said the bus management frequently cut their salary for the simple reasons such as when they inadvertently failed to fill their attendance list.
Food staples price hike happened just a few days before the beginning of the fasting month. One US dollar is about Rp9,200.
