Egg, pork prices to calm in one month: Thai authority

BANGKOK, April 23 (TNA) - Rising feed costs and the warm weather have recently shored up egg and pork prices in Thailand to new highs, but authorities have insisted on a downward trend in a month.

Yanyong Puangraj, Permanent Secretary for Commerce, said on Saturday chicken egg prices on the domestic market will soon reverse back to their normal levels within the next 30 days, as counter-measures have been in place to calm the surge, including official price quotes daily for local wholesale and retail trade, a weekly report to the Thai Ministry of Commerce on daily production by local chicken egg farms and official sales of cheaper chicken eggs under the “blue-flagged” egg scheme--under which up to one million low-priced chicken eggs are to be directly offered to consumers daily in all areas across the country.

The official “blue-flagged” stalls have offered at least 20-30 satang below market prices of each chicken egg. The wholesale price for the largest-sized chicken eggs was recently quoted at 3.70 baht each on the domestic market, and 4 baht each for retail.

Meanwhile, retail pork prices on the domestic market have not exceeded 140 baht a kilogram, with pork tenderloin, outer ridge and pork belly all sold within the benchmark. The senior Thai commerce ministry official said that lower supply of pig from local farms recently have caused wholesale prices of pork to rise and also triggering higher retail prices with reduced market demand.
