Thailand-Laos ink border security pact

NONGKHAI, April 23 (TNA) - Thailand and Laos have concluded a new security pact to safeguard common interests at border areas, covering the prevention and suppression of smuggling activities, as well as human and drug trafficking.

The memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed in Nongkhai on Friday by Wirat Limsuwat, Governor of Thailand’s northeastern Nongkhai Province, and Dr. Sombat Yialiher, Vientiane Mayor.

The MOU also includes joint coordination on border surveys and demarcation between the two neighboring countries, under the mandate of the Thailand-Laos Joint Border Commission (JBC).

The two sides have also agreed to hold further discussions to resolve encroachment activities through the bordering Mekong River, which have caused an unnecessary shift in boundaries and deterioration of the local eco-system.

Nongkhai and Vientiane will also look at upgrading temporary passes in the Thai province's Baan Mho area of Sri Chiang Mai District and Vientiane's Baan Nong Da, as international checkpoints to cope with growing developments of both neighbouring countries. (TNA)
