Thai exports expand 28 per cent in the first quarter this year

BANGKOK, April 22 (TNA) - Nantawan Sakuntanak , Director of Thailand’s Department of Export Promotion, said Thailand’s export volume expanded 28 per cent in the first quarter this year, led by agro-industry products.
With a steady outlook, the Department forecasted that the yearly export growth would reach at least 12 per cent in 2011, she said.
Export strategy would be concentrated on the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Chinese and Indian markets, constituting half of the world’s population, Nantawan said.
However, the rising oil prices remained a threat to exporters, raising their costs and competitiveness, she added.
From Thailand’s total exports last year, 22 per cent went to the ASEAN markets, 11 per cent to Chinese while the US, EU and Japanese markets accounted for about 10 per cent each. (TNA)
