NSW police urge drivers to take more care
SYDNEY (AAP) - Apr 22 - NSW motorists are again being reminded to take care on the roads over the long weekend after two deaths in Sydney and the state's central west.
Superintendent Joe Cassar from the Traffic Services Branch said people were still not taking enough care.
"Police have already had to perform the grim task of knocking on the door of two families to inform them their loved ones won't be coming home and I urge all motorists to think about this," he said in a statement on Friday.
The NSW Police Easter road blitz, named Operation Tortoise, runs until 11.59pm on Tuesday.
More than 1000 police are patrolling the state's roads and double demerit licence points apply for all speeding, seat belt and helmet offences.
So far, police have issued 3103 traffic infringement notices, including 1120 for speeding offences.
They have also conducted 46,588 breath tests, with 34 people charged with drink-driving offences.
At about 9.50pm on Thursday, a 78-year-old man died when he was hit by a truck while crossing the Mitchell Highway, 18km west of Bathurst.
An investigation into the collision is continuing.
Elsewhere, a 20-year-old man fell off a motorcycle while allegedly performing a wheelie on Yanderra Street at Condell Park in Sydney's south west.
He suffered major head injuries and was pronounced dead at Liverpool Hospital at 8.30pm on Thursday.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
