Thai PM orders evacuation of people from border areas after clash

BANGKOK, April 22 (TNA) - Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has ordered authorities concerned to evacuate people from border areas after the latest clash between Thai and Cambodian troops Friday morning.
Abhisit said that he had been informed of the latest clash in the northeastern Surin Province and the clash had stopped; while authorities were discussing the matter and investigating the cause of the clash, which reportedly killed and injured people, and were also surveying its impacts.
The Thai premier revealed that he had told the authorities concerned to facilitate the evacuation of people from the clash site for their safety and to take good care of them.
Thai Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya then said that he believed the situation would be contained and would have no serious impacts on local people as previous clashes, and that he thought the clash had anything to do with the upcoming World Heritage Committee meeting in France, at which the panel, under the United National Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), would discuss Thai-Cambodian border issues related to the Preah Vihear Temple.
Meanwhile, Thani Thongphakdi, Director-General of the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs' Department of Information, noted that, according to a Thai military report, Thai and Cambodian forces were 100 meters apart on the clash site but Cambodian soldiers then encroached on the Thai territory. Thai troops gave them a warning but Cambodian soldiers responded by firing at Thai soldiers, triggering the clash. Thani insisted that the incident is a local border issue and has nothing to do with the meeting of the Thai-Cambodian Joint Boundary Commission (JBC).
Thai Supreme Commander General Songkitti Jaggabatr said after receiving a briefing on the clash that the Cambodian soldiers started the gunfire and he had ordered all the armed forces to follow up the situation closely and to prepare for intensifying defence measures if the situation deteriorated.
