Thai Deputy PM to probe latest border clash with Cambodia

SURIN, April 22 (TNA) - Thai Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban has reaffirmed efforts to look into fresh clashes along the Thai-Cambodian border this Friday morning, while saying the crossfire may have occurred by mistake.
The latest gun battle between Thai and Cambodian troops erupted at early Friday dawn along the border near Ta Khwai castle in northeast Surin’s Phnom Dongrak District.
Suthep, who oversees national security, said he will be seeking details of the incident with the 2nd Army Area Commander, but reiterated for the time being both Thailand and Cambodia have worked together to ease border tensions, which have gradually improved.
In the latest development, Isiwut Tangkiart, head of the Thai-Cambodian traders and tourism association in Chantaburi Province, revealed that conditions at the eastern border province has remained calm, although locals have been on edge over possible clashes in nearby Surin.
Meanwhile, the local people there have voiced fears over possible setbacks to border trade, after a recent price surge in Thailand has already caused a 20 per cent decline in Cambodian purchases, averaging daily losses of about 5 million baht over the past ten days. (TNA)
