New round of Thai-Cambodian border clashes breaks out

SURIN, April 22 (TNA) - Thai and Cambodian soldiers clashed at their border near the Phanom Dongrak district of Surin province Friday morning. Gunfire rang out at times and it is reported that eight Thai soldiers have been injured.
The latest clash started at Ta Khwai castle and expanded to nearby Ta Muan Thom castle. The injured soldiers have been admitted to Phanom Dongrak Hospital, where civilian patients have been evacuated to the nearby Surin Hospital. Phanom Dongrak is now only treating people injured from the border clash.
Officials also evacuated people from at least 36 border villages in the Tambon Naengmood locality of Karbchoeng district and the Tambon Bakdai locality of Phanom Dongrak district to a self-development estate in the Prasart district of Surin province and to Phanom Dongrak School.
Panitan Wattanayagorn, deputy secretary-general to the Thai prime minster and acting government spokesman, said Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva was informed of the situation. He is following up their conditions and the cause of the border clash.
The prime minister passed the order for people in affected areas to be taken care of, and evacuated accordingly, until their situation returns to normal.
Panitan said reinforcements had not been discussed and concerned officials were trying to negotiate with their Cambodian counterparts. The border situation is said to be calming and the Foreign Ministry will explain the issue to the world community. Panitan insisted that Thailand were not at fault for the clash, stating that their soldiers did not move closer to the border or encroach on Cambodian territory but remained in their bases. He said there may be some misunderstandings and he hopes that the world community will understand. He added that he does not think that the clash is aimed at increasing the calls for the arrival of Indonesian observers in the disputed area between Thailand and Cambodia. (TNA)
