Thai Ministry of Energy acknowledges plan to import electricity from neighboring countries

BANGKOK, April 21 (TNA) - Norkhun Sittipong, the Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Energy, said Ministry of Energy has not changed its plan to import electricity from neighbor countries after the construction project of Thai-financed hydropower plant in Laos’s Sainyabuli province has been strongly opposed.

Norkhun said it is still ultimately up to the Lao government to decide whether or not to implement the project, explaining that the construction of the hydropower plant will not have a widespread impact on the environment because it is more like a run-of-the-river hydroelectricity power plant and is not meant to be used to store water.

He also said the ministry will continue to closely monitor the results and will attend a committee meeting on electricity imports. (TNA)
