Historic Avenue to boost tourism in Thai south

PATTANI, April 21 (TNA) - Authorities in southern Thailand’s Pattani Province are planning renovation work at a century-old community, as part of efforts to boost regional tourism.

The landscaping project, involving Pattani Bhirom Avenue, will revitalize elegantly styled buildings and homes, featuring 19th century Sino-architecture once enjoyed by its overseas Chinese community. Over past decades, the beauty has fallen under the garb of deterioration and depreciated by patchy repairs.

Lertkiart Wongphophan, deputy governor of Pattani, said on Thursday authorities are on the road to launch restoration work on the avenue, to bring back its original state.

“We are hoping to turn the site into another major southern landmark”, said Lertkiart, citing similar attractions in neighboring Phuket and Songkhla.

Initial costs for renovation have been estimated to reach a minimum of 5 million baht, he added.
