Thailand to produce vaccines for local use and export to ASEAN

BANGKOK, April 21 (TNA) - The Thai Public Health Ministry has joined forces with eight agencies to produce vaccines for local use and export to other member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Thai Public Health Minister Jurin Laksanavisit signed the agreement with representatives of the Department of Disease Control, the Department of Medical Sciences, the Government Pharmaceutical Organization (GPO), Mahidol University, the National Science and Technology Development Agency, the Queen Saovabha Memorial Institute, the Thai Red Cross Society, Thailand Center of Excellence for Life Sciences (TCELS) and Bionet – Asia Co., to produce the vaccines--which will save the Kingdom 3 billion baht annually.

Jurin said that the production of the locally-developed vaccines will cost about 5 billion baht, 4 billion of which will be paid by the government. The project involves the production of nine vaccines to tackle seven diseases, including diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, hepatitis B, tuberculosis, whole-cell pertussis, Japanese encephalitis (JE), dengue haemorrhagic fever and live attenuated JE.

According to the health minister, Thailand's development of vaccines for diphtheria, pertussis and tetanus was set to be first completed by 2013; while the rest should be achieved in the following five years. The production will take place at the Department of Medical Sciences' plants, the Government Pharmaceutical Organization the Queen Saovabha Memorial Institute and the Thai Red Cross Society.

Meanwhile, Dr. Sathaporn Wongcharoen, Director-General of the Department of Medical Sciences, said that his department is developing warehouses to keep viruses for the local vaccine production and has already collected samples of all the viruses to be used in the vaccine production. (TNA)
