Thai Ministry of Public Health looks after agriculturalists' health

BANGKOK, April 21 (TNA) - The Ministry of Public Health has a policy to look after the health of 14 million Thai agriculturalists and protect them from any health hazards caused by the use of chemical substances in agriculture, and to make sure agricultural products that Thai people consume are safe.

Pansiri Kullanatsiri, Deputy Minister of Public Health, said in the past 10 years, approximately 2,000 people have been poisoned by agricultural pesticides including insecticides and herbicides according to the Bureau of Epidemiology. In addition, around 28 percent of vegetables were found to have herbicides according to the Department of Medical Science’s random sample of vegetables in 2009.

Pansiri said for this reason, this year, the Ministry will provide a heath-check service for 840,000 Thai agriculturalists for free of charge. The agriculturalists will undergo a risk-assessment and blood test to determine their toxicity level. If it is found to be exceeding the dangerous level for a human body, they will be given treatment to remove the toxins out of their body, including the use of medicinal herb. The agriculturalists will also undergo a stress-assessment test and be given a stress-relief guideline. (TNA)
