Thailand proposes visa exemption agreement with China and Taiwan to mutually promote tourism

BANGKOK, April 21 (TNA) - Thai Tourism and Sports Minister Chumpol Silapa-archa has acknowledged the Cabinet's approval of his ministry’s proposal to hold talks with China and Taiwan on the visa waiver plan.

Chumpol said that the visa exemption, when implemented, is expected to further boost Thai tourism by drawing more tourists from China and Taiwan to Thailand, noting that the number of Chinese and Taiwanese arrivals in the Kingdom exceeded 100,000 during the first quarter of this year.

Thailand had exempted visa fees for international tourists until March 2, 2011 and had paid for their traveling insurance--as part of the Thai government's economic stimulus measures in the face of global economic downturn. The measures have now been canceled as the domestic tourism industry is improving in line with the global economic recovery. (TNA)
