Thai Cabinet to carry out phase-three of rubber tree plantation project

BANGKOK, April 21 (TNA) - The Thai Cabinet has endorsed a Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives plan to carry on its third-phase rubber tree plantation project, which began in 2010, until 2012.

Thai Deputy Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Supachai Phosu insisted that previously first two-phase rubber tree plantation projects have been successful and benefited the country's agricultural sector.

Earlier, Thailand's National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) proposed to the Cabinet to delay the implementation of the phase-three rubber project and let relevant agencies review procedures for rubber tree plantation promotion and impacts of the first two phases projects in order to learn more about emerging problems, claiming that several rubber plants died and grew slower than usual, particularly in the country's northeastern region. The NACC has also proposed an assistance guideline to help farmers improve their rubber tree farms to meet international standards, as well as a regulation on corruption-risk management.

Meanwhile, Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva suggested that the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives inspect rubber tree plantation areas to ensure they are planted on appropriate land to reduce problems. (TNA)
