Toll in China quake rises to 38

Beijing, Sept 1 (PTI) The toll in the 6.1-magnitude quake that hit southwestern China on Saturday rose to 38 Monday, as massive relief and rescue operations continue.

Huili county, the worst hit in Sichuan, registered five more deaths Monday, rising the death toll from 20 to 32 in the region, Xinhua news agency reported.

In the Yunnan province one more body was found taking the dead count to six. While latest investigations found about 195 people were injured in the district, among them 47 are serious. More then 300,000 people were affected as houses of nearly 13,000 households were destroyed or damaged, agency said.

In Panzhihua five deaths and 132 injury cases were registered and more than 32,000 people were evacuated for safety concerns. More then 1,800 houses collapsed and nearly 32,000 people were evacuated for safety concerns.

Most of the fatalities are in Huili, Chuxiong and Panzhihua, which sit on the southern end of the fault line of the May 12 quake that left more then 69,000 people and nearly 18,000 missing.

More than 467 people were injured in the quake region and about 152,000 were evacuated, the Ministry of Civil Affairs said, citing figures from the local governments.

In addition, around 258,000 houses were destroyed. Three large bridges in Sichuan's Panzhihua city, the epicentre of the quake, were damaged. Cracks were found in three reservoirs, Xinhua news agency reported.

The quake struck the juncture of Renhe District in Panzhihua and Huili County in Liangshan prefecture at 4:30 p.m. (2:00 pm IST) on Saturday.
