Private sector in Yala demands change to security measures

YALA, April 21 (TNA) - Business operators in Yala have urged the Thai government to improve public security and to review its safety zone measure following a recent car bomb attack in the southernmost Thai province earlier this week.

Pote Paibulkasemsuthi, a board member of and an adviser to Yala's Chamber of Commerce, said on Thursday that although local authorities declared the municipality a safety zone for over a month since two bomb explosions in the business district in February 2011, they have been unable to stop the violent attacks, such as the recent car bomb explosion which took place in front of a drug store on April 18.

Pote revealed that local authorities and business operators had earlier discussed the possibility of collecting parking fees along municipal roads to allow them to observe everyone parking vehicles there. However, the idea has not been implemented.

Pote said that local business operators now want improved security but are calling for concerned authorities to revoke the safety zone measure as it is considered causing inconvenience to people and discouraging buyers from entering the provincial business area.

According to the adviser to Yala's Chamber of Commerce, security problems have not seriously affected the overall economy of Thailand's far South, where agricultural products remain the main source of income. However, there have been impacts on the local labor and industry sectors, as security problems have considerably reduced the size of workforces as many workers appear to be concerned for their safety. There have been no new significant investment projects in local industries, as new firms have been mostly small-scaled retailers lately. (TNA)
