“Da Vinci” offers free surgery to needy patients

BANGKOK, April 20 (TNA) - Eighty-four fortunate patients are to begin applying for general surgery at Thailand’s leading Siriraj Hospital, for a chance to experience first-class robotic treatments, free-of-charge.

Clinical Professor Dr. Teerawat Kultanant commenced the programme at a press conference Wednesday morning, which was held to mark the 84th birthday anniversary of the revered Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadej this year.

Dr. Teerawat, also Dean of Medicine at Siriraj, said the android that was developed for the treatments, named “Da Vinci”, will be used to facilitate surgical work on the 84 people, covering cases of prostate cancer, kidney cancer, pyeloureterectasis, and variable forms of abdominal tumor. The launch has come as part of the hospital’s vision to provide all members of the society an opportunity to experience cutting-edge treatments.

Da Vinci, a four-armed robot, mounts on its first arm a high-definition 3D camera, while three more have forceps and a dissecting kit attached. Surgeons will be able to control their operations via controlled-handsets and special monitoring lens.

With regards to the benefits from robotic surgery systems, Dr. Teerawat said the technology has been renowned for surgical precision, where past medical records have proven lower blood loss among patients, faster wound recovery, and reduced number of complications.

Applications will begin from May 2 this year, available only to the underprivileged. Public contributions are also encouraged and can be donated through Siriraj Hospital’s hotline at +662-4197-6469 ext. 325. (TNA)
