Thailand promotes public participation in crime reduction

BANGKOK, April 20 (TNA) - Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva presided over a ceremony on Wednesday to open justice offices across the country, with the aim of promoting the development of people’s networks for solving crime and authority abuses across the country.

The morning ceremony was held at the justice office of Bangkok's Talingchan District--in which Thai Justice Minister Pirapan Salirathavibhaga and Minister Attached to the Prime Minister's Office Ongart Klampaiboon also took part.

The Thai Justice Ministry is encouraging people to help their government tackle crime and authority abuses, saying that the public can report such cases to volunteers who work at their local justice office.

The project will be implemented in three stages. The first stage will be the operation of four justice offices in Bangkok, one each in the Taladnam Khlonglatmayom community in Talingchan, the Sukhantharam community in Dusit District, the Yucharoen community in Don Muang District and the Din Daeng community in Din Daeng District. The second phase will lead to the development of eight more justice offices in each region of the country before adding a further 8 in each for the third phase.

During the opening ceremony, Abhisit said that social problems appear to be complex and that local people have the most in-depth understanding of their communal problems. The Thai premier then acknowledged that if the project expands successfully nationwide, people will receive better public services from the Thai government. (TNA)
