Kiev conf to deal with safety of nuclear power facilities

KIEV, April 20 (Itar-Tass) - An international conference on the theme
of "The 25th Anniversary of the Chernobyl Disaster. Safety of the Future"
opens here on Wednesday. It has drawn delegations from many countries, as
well as the leaders of authoritative international organizations such as
the United Nations, the Council of Europe, the European Commission, and
the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
Following the tragic events in Japan, this conference will become the
first forum for an earnest dialogue, rethinking of many important issues
connected with both the Chernobyl legacy and the nuclear power industry as
a whole.
The Ukrainian organizers of the forum hope that a detailed discussion
of problems of current concern will enhance international cooperation and
will give greater scope to possibilities for preventing nuclear industry
breakdowns.
An international conference of donor countries for the
Chernobyl-related projects and a summit on safety and innovative use of
nuclear power were held in Kiev on Tuesday. About 550 million euros have
been raised for the construction of a new Shelter over the ruined
Chernobyl Power Unit 4 and for the building of a nuclear waste storage
facility, Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich said. In particular, the
European Union will allocate additionally 110 million euros. France will
assign 47 million euros. Russia will provide 45 million euros in
2011-2012, said Mikhail Zurabov, special representative of the RF
President for the development of trade-and-economic relations with
Ukraine. The amount of funds raised is impressive but Ukraine hoped to get
200 million euros more than that from financial donors.
At the close of the three-day conference participants will visit the
Cherbobyl wayside zone the radius of which is 30 km. The stricken power
station proper is located at a distance of 110 km from Kiev. President
Yanukovich and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon will visit Chernobyl on
Wednesday prior to the commencement of the conference proceedings.
