GOVT DECLARES SEPTEMBER 1 START OF FASTING MONTH

Jakarta, Aug 31 (ANTARA) - The government through an Isbat (Islamic ritual festivity) meeting declared September 1, 2008 as the start of the Ramadhan fasting month as specified in the Religious Minister's Decree No 118/2008 signed on August 31, 2008.

"We want to step up unity and cohesion," Religious Minister Muhammad Maftuh Basyuni said when presiding over the 'Isbat' meeting at his office here on Sunday.

The Isbat meeting was attended by Communications and Information Minister Muhammad Nuh, Chairman of the Indonesian Council of Ulemas (MUI) Prof Dr KH Anwar Ibrahim, Vice Chairman of the House's Commission VIII Said Abdullah, chairmen of some Islamic organizations, representives of friendly countries and some Isbat members.
Based on data from 27 monitoring posts throughout Indonesia, the end of Syahban month fell on Sunday, August 31, 2008 at 02.59 Western Indonesian Stardard Time (WIB).
"At the time the sun sets on that date in Indoneia, the position of the crescent is over the horizon 4 to 5 degrees," Chairman of the Calendar Counting and Crescent Monitoring Agency Muchtar Iljas said.
Four of the 27 posts were reported to have seen a small crescent. The four posts were located in Gresik, East Java, Bantul in Jogyakarta, Gunung Sugih in West Lampung and in West Jakarta.
Based on their reports, it was agreed that the first of the Ramadhan fell on September 1, 2008, the minister said.
Responding to calls from the Nahdlatul Ulema and Muhammadiyah organizations as well as other institutions for the establishment of similar creteria in determining the first month of Ramadhan and Syawal and 10 Dzulhijah, the minister said his side was considering to set up a Lujnah Daimah, a permanent committee accommodating representives of many Islamic organizations and the communications and information ministry which will help solve difficulties.
