Kurdish politician: unprecedented repression of citizens in Kurdistan

Baghdad (NINA) – Independent Kurdish politician, Yousif Ahmed, said there is “unprecedented repression in Kurdistan by partisan figures, it continues until time being.”

He told NINA that “the demonstrators’ demands must be answered, these unprecedented behaviors must stop at once, and they represent flagrant violation of the constitution which gives freedom to people.”

Ahmed, former Member of Parliament, explained that “big demonstrations swept the streets, especially Sulaymaniya, faced by blatant assaults conducted by armed personnel of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan PUK against unarmed civilians inside residential areas. We do not understand why nothing was done to calm things down, instead of calming things down, the government started to repress the demonstrators.”

He went on saying “PUK personnel, today afternoon attacked Al Hurriya Sq. and started beating up citizens. A demonstrator got killed last night in addition to a number of wounded when these personnel set the platform of Bab Al Sarrai on fire (the platform for demonstrators’ speeches). There is also heavy gathering of armed men in all parts of Sulaymaniya.”

He referred that “we denounce these practices; the Sulaymaniya Council issued a statement denouncing these violations and demanding the evacuation of the city from these armed men. It sent demands to international bodies to monitor the status in the city.”

Demonstrations swept the streets of Sulaymaniya today afternoon in different parts of Sulaymaniya. Sulaymaniya University students took part in the demonstrations protesting the violence used against demonstrators.
