Germany grants Yemen $ 24 mln for cope with food crisis
SANA'A, Aug. 31 (Saba)- the Germany government would provide $ 24
million to support Yemenis to cope with the food crisis, German
embassy in Sana'a announced on Sunday.
According to the embassy's press release, with this contribution, Germany also wants to support the government of Yemen in its efforts to improve food security and to cope with the internal root causes for Yemen's dependence on food imports.German Government grants Yemen financial and technical assistance to relieve the plight of its poorest people who suffer from rising food prices, the release read.
The embassy said that, the World Food Program would receive from Germany $ 13.5 million over the next 3 years for its nutrition program for pregnant and breast feeding women and children under 5 who are particularly vulnerable.
Around $ 10.5 million would be used to support food security policy,
provide seeds and fertilizer to farmers for national food production
and launch a campaign against the production and use of qat which
has replaced the production of food in large parts of the country,
the embassy said.
By this additional grant, Germany will increase its two year
pledges for Yemen for the years 2007-2008 to around $ 135 million.AH
