Neurosurgery Ward Civil Hospital Karachi proving fatal
Karachi, April 19, 2011 (PPI): More than 10 patients die after suffering from various infections every month due to the nonoperational Intensive Care Unit (ICU), established at Neurosurgery Ward of Civil Hospital Karachi about one and half a year back.
The ward’s administration has failed to pay heed towards this problem and attendants of the patients have appealed to the higher authorities to resolve this problem forthwith.
Neurosurgery Ward of Civil Hospital Karachi (CSK) has been shifted to Sindh Government Services Hospital for some years now as a modern Trauma Centre is being established at the place of that ward.
All the patients of head injury, brain tumour and other related cases are actually needed to be shifted at ICU immediately after surgeries, but they are directly shifted to the ward that leads to fatal consequences as more than 10 patients die every month because of this problem.
Sources apprised that administrative officer is unable to pay full attention to the ICU ward as he has another role of Principal of Dow Medical University. The ICU ward consists of 12 beds, but no staff has yet been designated to run the affairs.
The CT scan machine in the ward has also been out of order for the last one and a half year due to which patients are being taken to the emergency ward of Civil Hospital Karachi. Most of the patients are getting their CT scan from private laboratories.
In this regard In-charge Neurosurgery Ward Professor Junaid Ashraf when contacted, told that shortage of staff is the major problem of ICU ward’s closure.
