Thai public prosecutor to decide in 7 days on red shirt bail

BANGKOK, April 19 (TNA) - Thailand's public prosecutor needs seven more days to consider if the bail for red shirt protest leaders should be revoked while their lawyer presents evidence to prove they spoke on April 10 to protect the royal institution.
Ruj Khuensuwan, public prosecutor for special litigation, who is handling the terrorism charges put against leaders of the protesting United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD), said he is currently examining evidence from the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) that sought the revocation of the bail for nine UDD leaders who have been charged with terrorism. He has said he will need about a week before deciding whether to ask the Criminal Court to revoke their bail or not.
Regarding the DSI’s plan to take legal action against the UDD leaders for lese majeste, Ruj said another group of public prosecutors were working on the matter with the DSI. He will not wait for the results of this matter before making his decision because it may take longer.
UDD’s lawyer Kharom Polthaklang said he provided Ruj with CDs and transcriptions of the UDD leaders’ speeches on April 10 to prove that they did not violate any of the conditions set by the Criminal Court for their bail as the DSI has claimed. He said that the April 10 rally had been scheduled in advance, had been peaceful and that the UDD leaders’ speeches had been meant to protect the royal institution.
Meanwhile, Maj Gen Kampanart Ruddit, commander of the 1st Division – the King’s Guard, said that royal guards were determined to protect and promote the royal institution and explained that the division had taken part in ensuring order during past demonstrations to guarantee internal security. His command is ready to take action in places when his superior gives the order. Maj Gen Kampanart refused to comment on the plan of the Election Commission to prohibit political parties from referring to the royal institution for the benefits of their vote campaigns. (TNA)
