ICT Minister confirms Internet Access for Thai rural homes in five years

BANGKOK, April 19 (TNA) - Information and Communication Technology Minister Juti Krairiksh received a number of computers and peripherals donated by the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) on Tuesday.

After the reception, he said his ministry had gathered used computers and accessories from the SET and 42 listed companies to be donated to rural schools and underprivileged children in a bid to narrow the digital divide in Thailand.

“Indicators of the national economy's strength include ICT readiness. With such readiness, Thailand will become more attractive to investors. The government plans to expand internet access nationwide to ensure that within five years all villages in Thailand will have access, providing greater learning opportunities for Thai children,” Mr Juti said.

SET chairman Sompol Kiatpaibul said that the SET was supporting the ICT Ministry's policy to provide underprivileged children in Thailand with computers and access to the net. He will therefore, encourage listed companies to donate usable computers and peripherals to schools, adding that donations could be included in their corporate social responsibility records. He finally added that the donations would help develop the Thai youth and Thailand.
