Thai DPM believes his Democrat Party will return to power
BANGKOK, April 19 (TNA) - Deputy Thai Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban, who is secretary-general of the Democrat Party and acts as the manager of the present government, believes that his party will return to government after the next general election.
He said the House should be dissolved on May 7 and the next election will take place by July and thirty days afterwards the next government will be formed. He believes that his Democrat Party will return to power but it will not be able to form a single-party government.
Suthep’s remark echoes Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva’s prediction that the new government will be formed approximately in August.
The deputy prime minister rejected statements from critics that the armed forces would do everything to help the Democrat Party if it loses in the polls and said that it was a rumor released by the Puea Thai Party.
Suthep expressed his surprise Gen Chavalit Yongchaiyudh's decision to resign from the Puea Thai Party. He said Gen Chavalit made an unpredictable move and had not explained his decision because he felt uneasy.
Puea Thai deputy leader Plodprasop Suraswadi said that he was stunned with Gen Chavalit’s resignation. Though he did say he respects the decision and believes that Gen Chavalit must have some kind of plan. He does not think the resignation will affect the popularity of the Puea Thai Party, especially in the Northeast because Gen Chavalit would not have run for election in any constituency anyway.
On Tuesday, the Election Commission is considering three drafted structures of constituencies proposed by its provincial authorities, one of which it will implement. The commission will study the proposals this week and will announce its decision and the relevant details at the end of this month before the prime minister dissolves the House. (TNA)
