Police pursue those behind latest car bomb in Yala

YALA, April 19 (TNA) - Police are hunting down suspects behind a car bomb explosion that killed one person and injured over 20 others in southern Thailand’s Yala province on Monday.

The car bombing took place at the entrance of the provincial highway office of Yala on Siroros road in Yala municipality. It killed one paramilitary ranger and injured six more along with and over 20 local people.

Police said they believe the bombers were insurgents who received bail recently, and are now following orders from leaders in hideouts along the border with Malaysia. Police are examining phone records in the area as well as DNA evidence collected from the bombed car, and have interrogated 12 witnesses so far.

On Monday night, a grenade was shot at a paramilitary ranger base, manned by eight officers, in Nong Chik district of Pattani province. The officers chased the attacker but were ambushed by another group of insurgents about 500 meters from their base. The ambush killed a ranger and two villagers.

Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban said that he sympathized with authorities in the far South but that he wanted them to step up security measures identifying and closing all gaps in coordination between police and soldiers. He said that it is important that authorities are able to ensure safety in urban areas to boost people’s confidence and explained that security problems in the far South partly resulted from those behind illicit businesses, and people with other vested interests.
