Severe drought hits Thailand's Northeast

BURI RAM, April 19 (TNA) - Thailand's northeastern areas have now been hit by severe drought, with a dozen of districts in Buri Ram Province having been declared drought-battered disaster zones.

Buri Ram's disaster prevention and mitigation office said on Tuesday that it is assessing the situation there to determine whether or not six other drought-hit districts should also be declared disaster zones, as more than 154,000 households in the 18 out of a total of 23 districts in the province have suffered from shortages of water for drinking and agricultural use. The provincial disaster prevention and mitigation office has also warned local people to brace for possible summer storms which may hit the province in the coming days.

In Kalasin Province, the water level at Lam Pao Dam has fallen to only 32 per cent of its usual volume due to the current drought, prompting local irrigation officials to reduce the amount released into nearby canals to four million cubic metres a day. The provincial governor has also instructed all district chiefs to prepare a contingency plan to deal with the drought itself and to assist local people, particularly those in the 10 districts which have no access to irrigated canals.
