Additional security personnel deployed in Koraput
Bhubaneswar, Aug 31 (PTI) A day after violence spilled to areas adjacent to Orissa's riot-hit Kandhamal, additional security personnel were deployed Sunday in Koraput district as the state sought more central forces.
Two companies of Central Reserve Police Force and three companies of Orissa State Armed Police (O.S.A.P.) were deployed at Jeypore where 11 people, including officials, were injured in a mob attack and clash between two communities over some objectionable graffiti in a college yesterday, police said.
Prohibitory orders were in force at nearby Baipariguda where two churches were damaged by miscreants, Deputy Inspector General of Police Sanjeev Panda said, adding six persons have been arrested in connection with the violence.
In the wake of the violence in Koraput, the state
government has sought 10 more companies of central
paramilitary forces to contain arson and prevent trouble from
affecting more areas, a senior official said.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, who had faced protest
from riot victims in a relief camp at Tikabali last evening,
visited Jalespeta Ashram Sunday in Tumudibandh area where
Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader Laxmanananda Saraswati had been
gunned down on the night of August 23, triggering the
violence.
Patnaik asserted that those perpetrating violence would
be punished and promised quick relief and rehabilitation for
the victims in the communally sensitive district.
In Kandhamal, near normalcy returned amidst reports of
stray incidents.
"The situation in Kandhamal is normal and the district
has remained incident free since yesterday. The chief minister
visited Jalespeta ashram amid tight security," Revenue
Divisional Commissioner, Southern Division, Satyabrata Sahu
said.
After reviewing the situation in Kandhamal, the chief
minister directed the officials to take immediate steps for
release of funds to help the people whose houses were damaged.
"I have asked the administration to take immediate
measures for rehabilitation of the violence affected people,"
Patnaik said.
Like in the past three days, curfew was relaxed for 10
hours to enable people to carry out their daily chores and no
untoward incident was reported from anywhere during the
relaxation period, official sources said.
While many people who had fled to forests out of fear
have returned and were given accommodation in 7 relief
camps, about 5,000 others are feared to be still in the
jungle.
Efforts were on to bring back those inside dense
forests and shelter them in the relief camps, they said.
As many as 100 families from Rupagaon village in
Chakapada area are now sheltered at the Y.M.C.A. here or with
their relatives.
Over 10,000 people have poured into the relief camps set
up at G Udaygiri, Raikia, K. Nuagaon, Baliguda, Phiringia,
Tikabali and Chakapada, where security has been tightened and
free kitchens opened. Authorities were initiating steps to
open more such camps, the sources added. PTI
