Russia, Thailand reach agreement on settlement of Russian debt
BANGKOK, April 18 (Itar-Tass) -- Moscow, Bangkok have reached a
principle agreement on settlement of Russia's debt to Thailand, Thai
Commerce Minister Pornthiva Nakasai said on Monday. Thailand has agreed to
an unprecedented deal, transferring the money to the Thai Finance
Ministry. For its part, Russia agreed to repay the debt in a dollar
equivalent rather than in commodities as earlier planned. The overall debt
was evaluated at 36.4 million dollars.
On March 31 the Russian Cabinet of Ministers endorsed a draft of the
protocol which was coordinated with Thailand.
The Thai minister announced this decision in the wake of a first
meeting of a bilateral sub-commission for trade and economic cooperation
between Russia and Thailand, which operates in the framework of the mixed
intergovernmental commission. Russian Deputy Minister for Economic
Development Igor Manylov headed the Russian delegation to the Bangkok
meeting.
"We agreed that in the near future the Russian Finance Ministry and
its Thai counterparts would sign a protocol to this effect," Manylov told
journalists at a meeting of the sub-commission. The Thai colleagues have
given us full support, Manylov said. Representatives of Russia and
Thailand discussed priority directions of bilateral cooperation in the
field of the banking and financial sector, in energy, tourism and
high-tech fields and in jewellery business.
Thailand is one of Russia's main partners in ASEAN. In 2010 the trade
turnover between Russia and Thailand totaled 2.9 billion dollars or was
111.5 percent up against the previous year. The share of Russia's exports
worth 1.5 billion dollars doubled its exports over the past year. Russia's
imports from Thailand which grew 46 percent last year totaled 1.4 billion
dollars.
"We promised to double the trade turnover between our countries by
2015, Manylov said. This is a high, new level we aspired to reach for some
time; today, we have fulfilled this task, signing a joint protocol,"
Manylov said.
