Thailand is ready for the next election

BANGKOK, April 18 (TNA) - While government agencies prepare for the next general election of Thailand, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has said that the next polling was more important than all the past elections because it would lay the path for the nation.

While opening and overseeing a meeting of over 1,000 young election volunteers, Abhisit said that politics concerned all people in the society because it set the direction of their society and determined their future. Public participation is essential for the development of democracy, he said, and that participation must be based on honesty and justice. Following a whole range of crises, Abhisit insisted that the next election, in either late June or early July, is comparatively more important.

Deputy Prime Minister for security affairs Suthep Thaugsuban said he agreed with the Election Commission's decision to prohibit politicians from referring to the royal institution in their vote campaigns and urged authorities to take strict legal action against such violators. Regarding the police’s request to proliferate use of the Internal Security Act throughout Bangkok, Suthep said that it had been put forward to prevent untoward incidents at demonstrations.

The Election Commission has also convened provincial election authorities to prepare for the next election. Election Commission chairman Apichart Sukhagganond told agencies to be prepared for it to take place 45-60 days after the House dissolution. They are expecting to finish planning the areas of constituencies this week. (TNA)
