Thai PM holds quick meeting to handle recent oil price surge

BANGKOK, April 18 (TNA) - Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has called for an urgent meeting of the cabinet, to discuss its oil policy. The call has come following persistent rises in the price of oil, which brought it to 123.45 U.S. dollars a barrel last month.

Discussions were held Monday morning between concerned authorities, including Finance Minister Korn Jatikavanich and Energy Minister Wannarat Charnnukul, which are thought to have covered the possibility of reducing the state tax on diesel by 1-2 baht a litre, from the current 5.3.

On April 11, the National Energy Policy Council raised the diesel subsidy from 5 baht 90 per liter by 0.5 baht to 6 baht 40 in order to freeze the diesel price at 30 baht per liter.

Abhisit said on Sunday that the government faces the task of urgently revising its diesel price subsidy, now that the State Oil Fund has 7.2 billion baht on reserve.

Since December 2010, the government has used up to 20.6 billion baht to cap the diesel price, he said, noting that the country could no longer depend solely on the State Oil Fund. (TNA)
