Aboriginal bashing victim dies in hospital
A young Aboriginal woman left for dead after a brutal bashing at a Cairns bus stop has died in hospital.
Police have identified the woman, found unconscious outside Freshwater railway station in the early hours of Tuesday morning, as 21-year-old Erica Liddy.
She had suffered serious head injuries.
Paramedics took her to Cairns Base Hospital in a critical condition but she died there on Friday afternoon.
Police are treating the matter as suspicious but have not yet upgraded her death to a murder investigation.
They are appealing for information from witnesses, particularly the person who called an ambulance from a pay phone outside the train station at 1.36am (AEST).
Ms Liddy was wearing a black T-shirt that said "Love is the new drug" and black shorts.
Her devastated family said she had moved from the tiny Cape York Peninsula town of Coen to Cairns to further her education.
"Erica had plans for a bright future and we all had many hopes for her," the family told the Cairns Post.
"Our family and friends are devastated at what has been done to Erica."
Investigations are continuing.
