Thai Commerce Minister to visit Russia for trade talks

BANGKOK, April 17 (TNA) - Thai Commerce Minister Porntiva Nakasai will lead a delegation to Russia on Monday to discuss economic cooperation in order to increase the value of bilateral trade.
Porntiva said she would attend a meeting of a Thai-Russian sub-committee on trade and economic cooperation in Moscow as both countries had not made any discussion through the sub-committee for years. The Russian delegation in the meeting will be under the leadership of Igor Malinov, Russian deputy minister for economic development. Representatives of government and private sectors of both countries will also attend the meeting.
Last year, the value of Thai-Russian trade amounted to 126.9 billion baht and accounted for 0.73 percent of the total trade value between Thailand and other countries. However, the value of Thai-Russian trade grew by as much as 76 percent.
Thai exports to Russia were estimated at 24.3 billion baht while Russian exports to Thailand were estimated at 102.6 billion baht. Important Thai exports to Russia consist of automobiles, electrical appliances and canned fruits while major Russian exports to Thailand include crude oil, iron, steel and fertilizers.
Regarding tourism, the number of Russian visitors is the third biggest among foreign visitors to Thailand, following China and Japan. In 2010, over 600,000 Russian tourists visited Thailand and their number doubled from the figure in the previous year.
Porntiva said that Russia and Thailand planned to double the value of their mutual trade by 2015. At present, Thai investments in Russia are minimal. The Thai government will encourage its businesses to invest more in Russia especially in potential areas such as hotels, restaurants, maintenance, livestock and furniture. Meanwhile, Russia said it was interested in producing and selling small wind generators and jointly producing hydrogen-powered electricity generators in Thailand. (TNA)
