Massive return of Songkran travellers to Bangkok

BANGKOK, April 17 (TNA) - Bus terminals in Thailand are packed with people returning from their Songkran holidays.

The passenger lounge of the 2nd bus terminal of the northernmost Chiang Rai province is full of people who are waiting for their buses as Songkran festival has concluded. Officials there expect over 25,000 passengers to use bus services on Sunday, so they arrange for over 100 additional buses to meet travellers’ demands.

The bus terminal of Phitsanulok province which is the center of transport in the lower North is also packed with people, most of them heading for Bangkok and nearby provinces.

A checkpoint has been set up at the bus terminal of Lamphun province to conduct alcohol tests on bus drivers for the sake of passengers’ safety. Five bus trips have been added to serve travellers whose number is estimated at 5,000 or over.

The bus terminal of the northeastern Sakon Nakhon province is also congested. Lots of passengers are waiting for their tickets to return to work in Bangkok. Staffs of Transport Company confirm there are enough buses for all passengers.

The State Railway of Thailand has increased the number of passenger trains on northern and northeastern routes from the normal number of 250 by 12 on April 16-18 to serve passengers who are returning from other provinces to Bangkok. Their number should rise by 40,000 a day.

Meanwhile, massive amounts of travellers continued to arrive at the Mor Chit 2 bus terminal in Chatuchak district of Bangkok as the Songkran festival ends. (TNA)
