Thai Songkran Water Festival holidaymakers start to return to Bangkok

BANGKOK, April 17 (TNA) - Thousands of Songkran celebrants have begun making return trips back home after concluding the Thai “Songkran” New Year festival this week on April 13-15.

In northern Thailand’s Phitsanulok Province, people en route to Bangkok and its vicinity were packed at local bus and train terminals there, with most trips having been reserved.

At Srisamruan, chief of Phitsanulok Transports Authority, said up to 140 additional buses have been stationed to accommodate large inbound trips over the weekend, and insists services for all passengers.

Similar conditions were seen in southern Songkhla Province, with people crowding its central Hat Yai bus station since morning for empty tickets until Sunday.

Masamun Derapu, head of Hat Yai’s bus station, admitted the amount of people travelling through the compound was unprecedented, prompting authorities to add up to 21 more bus trips to some 35 currently.

Meanwhile, authorities have warned travellers to be watchful against illegal ticket touting groups, and advised purchases to be made directly through Transport Authority vendors. (TNA)
