Joy continues on last day of Songkran water festival in Thailand

BANGKOK, April 17 (TNA) - Joy continued in many provinces across Thailand on Sunday, the final day of the Songkran water festival.

In the eastern Chon Buri province, the Saen Suk municipality organised its annual traditional festival of sand pagodas in Bang Saen area. The event included alms offerings, the demonstration of caramel production, a Thai traditional New Year ceremony to give best wishes to senior citizens and traditional sports competitions. The highlight of the event was a sand pagoda contest. The activities attracted crowds of people and tourists.

In the northern Thai province of Lamphun, people and tourists flocked to Phra Borommathat Haripunchai. They worshiped the important pagoda aged over 1,400 years to seek blessings before returning to work after the Songkran festival.

In the northeastern Thai province of Kalasin, many people visited Buddhist temples, sought blessings and prayed for their safe trips to work.

The government’s road safety center reports that there were 348 road accidents which killed 41 people and injured 386 others on Saturday.

During six days of the Songkran water festival there were 2,932 road accidents that killed 229 people and injured 3,172 others. The most common cause is still drunk driving and motorcycles remain as the most common kind of vehicles in road accidents.

Meanwhile, lots of people arrived back from their Songkran holidays at Suvarnabhumi airport. At least 130,000 travelers should pass the airport on Sunday. The number is relatively high compared with traffic during the Songkran festival last year.

This year 25 airlines have increased their regular and chartered flights to meet the demands of Thai and foreign tourists and the rise is sufficient.

During the Songkran festival period, Suvarnabhumi airport improved services including increased immigration police to speed up immigration procedures, the deployment of police to secure both the inside and outside of the airport and more traffic police to facilitate traffic to and from the airport.
