Thai PM Abhisit reaffirms Thailand is heading for a new general election

BANGKOK, April 17 (TNA) - Thailand’s Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has reconfirmed that there will not be any coup d’etat to obstruct democracy in Thailand as many parties are concerned, saying that the country is heading for a general election that will lead to its stability.

In this weekly talk programme on TV Sunday morning, Abhisit dismissed the speculation of a coup. He assured that the Thai society was returning to its normal state with the upcoming election. It waits only for the passage of amendments to three election-related organic laws. In this case, he will ask the Senate to pass the amendments quickly so that he can seek a royal command for the House dissolution within the first week of May as he plans.

“Although the election is not a single solution to all problems, it is very important to organize a smooth election as this will boost the confidence of the world community in Thailand,” Abhisit said. He expressed his confidence that the new government that will be formed after the election will lead the country to political stability which will result in efficient solutions to people’s problems.

Abhisit said that he would discuss with the Election Commission the duties of the government after the House dissolution. This is to guarantee an honest, fair and genuinely acceptable election and to prove to all political parties that the government will not take any advantage when it comes to vote campaigns.

The prime minister also expressed his concern about attempts to involve the royal institution in politics. He said that the institution was above politics. He will have the cabinet secretary-general discuss with the Election Commission possible regulations on any political party or politician that abuses reference to the royal institution for a political gain.
